LM 101: Communication Skills for Christians

This post belongs to a new series called the “Life Management 101″ Series:

  1. Goal Setting for Christians
  2. Time Management for Christians
  3. Decision Making for Christians
  4. Organizational Skills for Christians
  5. Communication Skills for Christians

How do Christians communicate differently? Do we communicate differently?

We are always representing God when we interact with people, especially to non-Christians. What we say and do can influence another person’s decision to salvation.  It is a big deal. Good communication skills come with practice. And nobody can do it perfectly.  But one who does not seek to improve, will fall behind and feel the consequences.

To be a better communicator, just remember two things: Listen and Love.

  • Learn to listen to God, as He speaks to you through the Bible, books and other people.

In the Bible: James is a really good chapter that talks a lot about speech.  James says that  you should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger; the words you say are like the wheels on your car because it direct your life’s direction (paraphrasing).  Listening to God will help you see people differently and help you really listen to people.

Good Communication Skills  Work on ONE of these at a time!!!

  • Learn to love.  See people through God’s eyes.
  • Make time to speak face to face.
  • Give 100% of your attention.
  • Have eye contact.
  • Be honest and open.
  • Let people finish speaking their sentences.
  • Don’t judge. Don’t gossip. Don’t complain.
  • Set personal boundaries, and respect others’ boundaries.
  • Apologize if you are wrong.
  • Pay attention to body language. Smile lots.
  • Be strategic to the topics you discuss.
  • Remember that you represent God always, even in cyber space.
  • Remember that you can always leave (if things got too out of hand).
  • Remember that the Holy Spirit is with you.

There are a lot of books and services out there to help you communicate better… But how can you discern which voices to listen to?  How do you know if you should even be listening to my voice?

Good news is that we have the Holy Spirit that guides us.

The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit help us discern and speaks for us.  You must trust God that he will provide you with the right resources you need. (Seek and you will find.)

For example, my favorite series on communication is the Boundaries series by Dr. Townsend and Dr. Cloud.

This series includes:
Boundaries, (in dating, marriage, with kids, teenagers etc)

Remember to look for it in your local library before you buy it : ) Less is more.
